How to Choose a Painting Size Above Your Sofa
Golden Oak Reverie painting above a cream sofa in a styled Painting Matters catalogue setting

A painting above the sofa should feel part of the room. Too small, and it can look stranded; too wide, and it can crowd the furniture beneath it. Before choosing a piece for your Singapore home, a tape measure and a few sheets of paper can help you decide what actually fits.

Start with the sofa, not the whole wall

Measure the sofa from its outer left edge to its outer right edge. Then note the usable wall space above it, allowing for curtains, shelves, switches and air-conditioning units. An uninterrupted wall can take a different arrangement from a narrow section between two doors.

As a starting point, try an artwork arrangement around two-thirds of the sofa’s width. Treat this as a suggestion to test, rather than a rule. For a 210 cm sofa, that means trying a paper outline about 140 cm wide. A smaller piece can still work if you want a quieter, more intimate effect.

Check what the listed dimensions include

Write down the width and height separately, and confirm the orientation. Ask whether the measurements describe the canvas or the finished framed piece. A frame adds to the outside dimensions, so the number you mark on the wall should be the final overall size.

For example, our Golden Oak Reverie listing gives dimensions of 120 × 60 cm. Its horizontal composition is a useful starting point when considering a wide space above seating. Confirm the finished framed dimensions before planning the exact position. The cover photograph is a styled catalogue setting, not a scale drawing or a customer-home photograph.

Try the outline before committing

Join sheets of paper into a rectangle matching your proposed outer dimensions. Use a wall-safe fixing method suitable for your paint finish, testing it discreetly first. Position the outline above the sofa, then look at it from the entrance and from your usual seat across the room.

Check the space between the sofa back and the lower edge. Leave comfortable clearance for seated heads and everyday movement. Try the outline slightly higher and lower; the best position should connect the artwork with the seating without making either feel cramped.

Small paintings need a different plan

A compact painting can be lovely on a smaller wall beside the sofa, or as part of a considered grouping. If you arrange several pieces, measure the whole group, including the gaps. Keep those gaps consistent enough for the pieces to read together.

Painting Matters reproduction of Van Gogh’s Almond Blossom, showing pale flowering branches against a blue background
Almond Blossom, a Van Gogh reproduction from our catalogue, is listed at 40 × 30 cm. Artwork photograph; not a demonstration of its scale above a sofa.

The Almond Blossom reproduction illustrates the difference: its listed 40 × 30 cm size calls for a different placement from a broad horizontal painting. Choose with your measurements in hand, rather than judging size from a room photograph.

Bring three things when you come to look

Bring your sofa width, a straight-on photograph of the wall and the dimensions of the paper outline you preferred. They make it easier to discuss proportion, framing and alternatives. Request a no-obligation gallery visit to see the paintings in person before deciding.
