You do not need an art vocabulary to choose a painting. Start with three things: the space you have, the amount you are comfortable spending, and an image you enjoy coming back to.
Start with the wall, not the trend
Measure the wall space above your sofa, console or bed, then mark out a possible canvas size with removable paper. Stand back and look from the doorway as well as from your usual seat. This is a simple way to judge scale before committing.
Include the frame in your measurements. A painting that looks generous on a product page can feel small above a long sofa; a large canvas can overwhelm a narrow entrance. Your room decides what works.
Choose a subject you want to live with
A familiar street, a lively market or a quiet abstract can each bring something different to a room. There is no need to match every colour to your cushions. Look for a connection: a place you recognise, a mood you like or a detail that makes you pause.
Our Tong Ah Eating House painting from Streets of Singapore brings a familiar local streetscape into the home. Tiny People: Weekend Market offers a busier scene to explore up close. See each listing for its current dimensions, price and availability.
Set a comfortable budget
Affordable art should still be something you actually like. Compare the total cost, including the canvas size and your preferred framing, rather than choosing on price alone. Ask what is included if the listing is unclear.
At Painting Matters, our approach is simple: real hand painted art, fairly priced. You can browse available paintings and see the price before deciding. Availability can change, so check the individual listing before ordering.
When a custom painting makes sense
If you have a particular image, wall size or colour direction in mind, a custom painting may be the better starting point. Prepare your reference image, the width and height you want, and any preferences for acrylic or oil on canvas, style, texture and framing.
A reference helps us understand your idea; it is not a substitute for agreeing the details. Use Create your own to send your choices and request a quote. We review the request with you before production.
See it in person if you are unsure
Photos help you shortlist. A gallery visit lets you judge the painting at a different distance and see how its colours and surface feel to you.
Request a no-obligation gallery visit, Wednesday–Sunday, 11am–8pm. Visits last 45 minutes and are confirmed by our team. We send the gallery address after approval.
